The Process
1. You will begin by taking a School Improvement Survey.
This will help your teacher choose the "Principal's Pet" groups.
2. You will be put into your "Principal's Pet" group of four.
Your group has been assigned one of the following areas:
- Playground / Recess
- Technology
- Cafeteria
- Classroom supplies
- Supplies for Specials classes
- After-school activities
- School uniforms
- School rules
3. Each of you will choose a role for this project:
- Publicist - takes notes for the group, writes the survey and presentation rough draft
- Surveyor - creates the group survey using Microsoft Word
- Graphic Designer - graphs the survey results using Create-a-Graph
- Presentation Creator - creates the group presentation using PowerPoint
You may draw the roles out of a hat or use your creative thinking
skills to
come up with another fair way to decide job titles.
4. Use the resources listed below your topic to begin your research.
5. Now that you are more familiar with your topic after researching other schools and/or available supplies you need to work together to write your survey. First, write a rough draft of your survey, including a title. Get it approved by your teacher. The Surveyor is in charge of typing your survey into Microsoft Word. Remember, you are writing this for other 4th graders, so make all your questions clear with specific answer choices. Your survey needs to include at least 10 questions related to your topic.
6. Prepare a short speech to share when you visit the 4th grade classes. You will need to provide a bit of background information to the students about the project our class is working on. Assign parts for each group member and practice your speech.
7. Set up times to visit the 4th grade classes. While you visit your group needs to give your speech and have the students complete the survey.
8. After giving the survey to all the 4th graders, your group will work together to tally the survey results. Use the tally chart. Then find the percentage of students who voted yes or no for each question. You may use a calculator.
(Ask your teacher for assistance with percentages!)
9. Once you have all the tallies counted it is time to graph your results. The Graphic Designer and other group members will use Create-A-Graph. Complete the following steps in order:
- Select "Bar Graph" under "Type of Graph"
- Title your graph
- Create your X and Y axis labels
- Input your graph data (percentages of yes votes)
- Preview your graph
- Show your teacher the graph
- Print the graph once your teacher has approved it!
- Save your graph in a group members folder
10. Now that you have graphed your results you need to start brainstorming how you will persuade
Mr. Vargo and Mrs. Pfeifer to make your changes to our school. Include survey/question results, graphs, comments, and other information from your research in Step 4 to support your data!
11. Use the Slide Organizer to create a rough draft of your presentation. When your group has finished this step show it to your teacher to make sure you're on the right track.
12. After your teacher has approved your Slide Organizer your Presentation Creator may begin working with the group to type the information into a PowerPoint presentation. Type all of the information before changing the font and adding clipart!
13. Review your PowerPoint presentation to make sure you've included all your information. Prepare for your presentation to Mr. Vargo & Mrs. Pfeifer. Decide what each group member will be in charge of during the presentation. What slides will each member present? Who will explain the data and graphs?
14. Present to Mr. Vargo and Mrs. Pfeifer! Good luck!
15. Complete your Self and Peer Evaluation.
