Our ladybug experience was wonderful! We watched the ladybug life cycle in our classroom by observing the changes in real ladybugs. We learned many things about them and did a lot of interesting things with them.

Here are some of the different things we completed:

Lucky Ladybugs Project

To help us keep track of the changes in our ladybugs we kept journal entries in our Ladybug Journals. Everyday we
would make observations about the ladybugs and then write and draw a picture of what we observed. Everytime
the ladybugs made a big change we wrote about it on chart paper and drew pictures.
For this project we cut out red circles and painted black dots onto the paper. Then we folded the red circle in half,
which transferred the paint to the other side. Then we added black heads, antennas, and legs.

After viewing some of the other projects that classrooms had completed on the Lucky Ladybug website, students decided they wanted to make addition problems using ladybug spots. Students were given two circles (a red one, which was cut in half, and a black one). Students were also given several small black circles to use as spots. Once students decided on their problem, they glued the dots to their ladybug and wrote a corresponding number sentence.

Along with completing projects we also read many non-fiction books about ladybugs and we researched ladybugs
on the Internet. Students created a class diagram showing the different parts of a ladybug and the facts that
they learned from our readings.

This project fit in really well with our classroom learning. Along with the ladybugs, we also have been studying
the life cycles of butterflies, chicks, and tadpoles.

We have been working on using words to describe objects in class. What a better way to practice than describing ladybugs. We made lists of words that started with each letter in the word ladybug and using one word from each
list we made Ladybug Acrostic Poems.
